Terry Canning
Terry Canning was destined to become the superb percussionist he is today. Terry began playing drums at the early age of eight and, being the youngest member of the very musical Canning Family, learned a great deal from his elder siblings. Performing with the various members of his two older brothers’ bands, The Dontays and TW4, Terry commanded a strong understanding of popular music early in his career. His high school jazz combo took first place in a statewide jazz festival; and during his first year at Lewis University, Terry was drumming in the concert band, jazz ensemble, marching band, jazz combo, and was percussionist in the University Symphony.
Following graduation from college, Terry began working for Slingerland Drum, Inc. acting as sales representative; hosting drum clinics and demonstrations at professional musical shows such as the Annual National NAM Convention, in the company of Slingerland endorsed drumming greats Louie Belson, Steve Gadd and Danny Seraphine of Chicago.
Terry left Slingerland in 1979 to become the show drummer on the Costa Tour line ship, “World Renaissance,” sailing the Caribbean providing the rhythm for well known entertainers from both Europe and the United States. Terry’s spontaneous sense of humor and congenial personality aided his becoming one of the luxury cruise line’s most entertaining musicians.
Terry is the original drummer for one of Chicagolands most popular bands, The Dancing Noodles. Filling up the stands at summer festivals and opening for national acts including: Cheap Trick, Joe Walsh, AC/DC, The Temptations, and The Young Rascals. The Noodles also gained notoriety writing and recording the theme song for the two time North American Soccer League champions, The Chicago Sting.
Terry Canning is a dominant percussionist much in the tradition of Buddy Miles and Tower of Power’s David Garibaldi. His talent combined with his wit and humor and his ability to sing lead vocals makes Terry Canning an exceptional and very entertaining performer.
